As I prepare for some upcoming weddings, I thought it would be a good idea to try out a lens that I’ve been dying to play with but haven’t had the chance to yet. I decided to rent the Canon 100mm f2.8L Macro lens from Borrow Lenses and I was thrilled when it arrived on Thursday. If you haven’t heard of Borrow Lenses, it’s a great site where you can rent any equipment for different lengths of time and send it back on it’s return date. It’s super easy!! I spent the whole weekend playing with the macro and I definitely learned a few things.
I found that I definitely have so much more control when I focused manually. There’s nothing wrong with auto focus, but just from the little experience that I’ve had with it, I found that focusing manually allows me to compose the shot how I want it and nail the focus. When you use auto focus it’s best to use the center point, but if you are shooting at a wide aperture, then recompose, you risk moving the lens out of the focal plane and getting a blurry shot.
Glare ruins the shot. I decided to practice on my wedding ring and definitely realized very quickly how important it was to get the light just right. We all already know how important light is to our photography, and this is no exception. If the light is hitting the diamond directly, then you’re going to get glare and miss out on all of the intricacies of the diamond.
I definitely can’t wait to add this one to my arsenal! I absolutely loved using this lens this weekend! It takes a lot of practice to get used to but it can produce some stunning images.
