I’m sharing some of my personal tips on how to work from home. In this uncertain and crazy time during the Covid-19 and a lot of you are finding yourselves working from home for the first time and it can be a little overwhelming. I have…some…experience on the topic and wanted to share with you a few things that I do (well try to) to make the most of working from home.
This honestly is something I struggle with but I know it works. I’m most productive in the morning and feel like my day is wasted if I oversleep. Try to get a jump on the day and get up around the normal time you would if you were going into the office. It’s tempting, when you’re home and not leaving, to sleep in but fight that temptation.
Making your bed in the morning might sound silly but it’s proven that you feel more productive when you make your bed. You’ve already accomplished one task and now you’re ready to tackle the day.
Whether this is exercise, yoga, prayer, devotional or enjoying breakfast with your family, do something that brings you joy and can help fuel your day.
All of us who work from home people have sported that yoga pant/top knot/sweatshirt look from time to time, but I’ve found that I’m most productive when I’m dressed for the day. So take that shower and put on some real clothes. Switching from your “at home” clothes and into “work” clothes separates your day and puts you in a different mindset.
Having set work hours is crucial when working from home. You should have a start and stop time, like you do when you go into the office. Also having a designated work space in your hope helps distinguish your work time from your time at home. Things can tend to blur together if you’re sitting on the couch and think about the dishes and laundry that need to be done. There have been many times when I decide to not work in my office and instead work from the living room then find myself vacuuming. It just helps to have a designated space.
This is coming from someone who is a planner, so ignore this tip if lists doesn’t help you. Making a list of all of my to dos for the day gets it out of my mind and makes it more tangible so I can tackle the day. Pick your top three must dos for the day and write them at the top. Those out of your full list are the ones that should take the majority of your attention for the day. If you need to write out a schedule, hour by hour, then definitely do that! Maybe even set a timer and work on one project for a certain amount of time an then switch to another when the timer is done.
When you’re in the office you more than likely take breaks, socialize and go to lunch. Make sure you make time to move around, eat and take a mental break.
When you are finished for the day, be finished for the day. It’s easy to want to keep working when it’s right there but leaving that space and ending your day is important. You should separate your work and home life and have a hard stop to your work day.
Well those are a few of my tips to help you make the most out of working from home. I hope that was a little helpful! Time to get to work!
